Today I had my eye exam, including the standard glaucoma test and the pupil dilation thingy where they give you eyedrops and then shine very bright lights at you. That one only needs to be done every 2-5 years, but I hadn't had one for, I think, 3 or 4 years, and it was no extra charge, so... And they have these really tacky plastic sheets cut into rough sunglasses shapes that you slip behind your glasses so you don't get blinded, which is very thoughtful of them, because stepping outside at noon on a sunny day after you get your eyes dilated hurts.

Anyway, vision in my right eye has degenerated since my last exam, but my left eye is definitely stabilizing, which is good. My mom says that her eyes stabilized at different times, so this is not unexpected. (Aside from color differences, I totally have my mom's eyes. Vicky has our dad's eyes and better than 20/20 vision, btw, which is completely and utterly unfair.)

I picked out some frames, and my new glasses should be ready for fitting this weekend.

Also, I got a discount because of a group plan! See, the shop where I work is a minor division of a news corporation, and they offer this nifty discount thingy that saved me, I think, $25 to $40 total. New glasses are still freaking expensive, especially because I have to get special polycarbonate lenses in order to not have them weigh something like ten pounds, but still. Savings are always to be appreciated. :-)

...

In a random aside, both Harley-Davidson and John Deere -- yes, John Deere, the tractor company -- either make or license their names to several types of glasses frames. Who knew?

...

Being nearsighted stinks. I have worn glasses since I was six years old, and they're an integral part of several of my habitual fiddly gestures (to the point where, during the year I experimented with contact lenses, I found it hard to concentrate during tests because I'd keep reaching up to adjust my glasses and they weren't there), but glasses are such a pain. You have to clean them; they steam up or get rain all over and then you can't see; you're practically blind when you go swimming; they get hot in summer and freeze your ears off in winter (yes, plastic frames would solve that but I don't like how they look on me); and they get caught in your hair and pull wisps out of ponytails; sometimes they give you headaches when you read, but you can't even see the words without them unless you keep the book a bare 6 inches from your face; and they're just generally a nuisance.

But, you know, it's kind of cool to be able to take them off and see the world turn into an Impressionist painting, and watch headlights splinter into fractal mosaics. I always like doing that.

And having glasses is a hell of a lot better than trying to navigate through a world that blurs into a jumble of colored smudges.

Oh. And in unrelated news, I finished editing "Finding Marea" last night. I want to let it sit a day, after which I'll give it one final run-through and then print it. Exact formatting TBD.
