I wrote a bit more about Ekanu this week, though this excerpt is from much later in her life, after she's already spent several years traveling. It's also a lot more open-ended than the other snippet, since it seems to be part of a longer episode instead of a self-contained scene.

Beyond that, nothing of particular interest has happened over the weekend. Well, I started a Draco monologue, but that's WAY on the backburner after a number of other things I ought to finish.

It was there. I wrote something. Astonishingly, this one came in under the time deadline, which is very odd as I write quite slowly.

It's loosely Harry Potter, in that it relies on the basic system of magic, Muggles, and owl post, but mostly it's just about a woman, her father, and a sailboat.

Theories of Magic )

There's a certain amount of self-insertion in this one, but not as much as one might think. Also, it's been a couple years since I sailed; bear with my vagueness and lack of proper terminology.

When I was in the city a few weeks ago, I picked up a copy of "Shaka's Children" from the Strand. It's a history of the Zulu from the founding of their kingdom to the early 1990s, and it's very interesting.

I like reading histories and cultural studies, partly because they're a nice break from fiction (after a while, all stories start to sound the same) and partly because they're useful research. Even if I don't intend to do anything with the information at the time, sooner or later it usually comes in handy.

In this case, the Zulu are a strong influence on the Danna, a group of people in one of my original worlds. So it's good to learn all about the Zulu that I can, so I know what's the same and what's different, instead of just groping in the dark.

And in other news, the weather sucks, but I bought molasses cookies so all is well.
