edenfalling: headshot of a raccoon, looking left (raccoon)
I slept badly last night, which turned out to be a good thing because I put a log on the fire at 4am that kept it burning long enough for Dad to add another at 7am. So the fire stayed alive, and the cabin never got too cold.

This morning I took the handsaw and cut off some more branches from the pine tree, but my shoulders got sore (partly residual soreness from using the clippers yesterday, I think) so I came in. And wrote a little ficlet.

This is Ekanu on her way south to Estara. Someday, I think I'll go back and elaborate on her impressions of the journey.

Found this on [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge's journal. I really have no idea what to make of my warning.

Thing #2: Dostoyevsky

Today I finished reading Dostoyevsky's The Idiot, almost two years after I started. See, two years ago I read The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment during the summer. I loved them. I resolved to read The Idiot next, but I never got a clear space of uninterrupted time, and so kept having to go back and read the beginning again. (Having effectively NO summer vacation last year did not help anything.) This time, having got Part I firmly fixed in my head by now, I started on Part II on Thursday and finished the book this afternoon.

It's a wonderful book, but awfully depressing. The people either die, go mad, go to prison, or sort of muddle on through in their petty lives without even learning anything from the events of the novel. At least in The Brothers K and Crime and Punishment, there's a sense that people have learned from their troubles.

Anyway, I have now started The Possessed, which is going quite well so far. I think from now on, I should only attempt to read Russian novels during the summer when I have a week or two clear. Otherwise I get distracted too easily.

Thing #3: Star Island Update

Dad and I clipped and sawed away at the pine tree more this afternoon, but had to come in on account of rain. *sigh* Tomorrow is supposed to be drier, and we will attempt to get the chainsaw working. Watch out, tree!

Thing #4: The Prisoner of Azkaban

I find myself surprisingly unexcited by the PoA movie coming out. I liked the first two films well enough, but for me, they've always felt very much secondary. The books are the main thing for me, and as I never visualize much if at all while reading, I haven't found myself adopting the movie visuals in my own mental wizarding world.

(Besides, I hate Movie!Ginny's hair. Far too straight and brownish.)

This is not to say that I don't approve of the excitement, just that I feel kind of like I'm standing on the sidelines waving cheerfully as people race by in a marathon. It's a little peculiar.
