slow torture
Jan. 5th, 2005 01:43 pmI keep writing and writing and yet nothing gets finished. *sigh*
Am now working on the final scene of "Paint the Town" -- which really is final this time! (I know, because I have convinced Ron to leave.) The whole explanation scene wasn't as funny as I hoped it would be, but the characters basically refused to do what I wanted them to do and said their own things instead. It works, I think, but it isn't what I expected.
Also wrote another couple hundred words of "Apartment Manager" and started fiddling around with "Strange Likenesses" again after a long hiatus. (That's the AU Harry Potter fic in which Voldemort realizes he's linked to Harry shortly after the fateful Halloween, and does something about it. Only he screws up.) Chapter 2 of SL has just one more scene, and then I am freed from the constraints of PS/SS canon and can go my own way. That will be a relief!
The trouble with writing stories alongside canon (of any series) is you keep running across scenes that the author already wrote (or drew, or filmed), and you have to be careful about quoting them, playing off them, etc. It's much easier to write future fic or pastfic, since, though you still have to watch out for timeline issues, you're in charge of who says what when and to whom, and who goes where.
It feels odd to be writing this much. Normally I feel lucky to get 500 words a day, but here I am banging out something over 2000. I blame three things: a) I'm unemployed, b) my friends aren't in Ithaca with me now, and c) the public computer labs kick me out at 6pm. There's only so much housework I can do. Basically, I have to read, write, or go slowly insane.
I'm mostly picking writing. :-)
