how to find silver linings
Aug. 2nd, 2005 06:47 pmWell.
My job has ended. That is, as I am a temp, not a "real" employee, they have decided to let me go. Not enough work or something... which seems slightly fishy, since new people have been hired not that long ago.
Ah well.
I have enough money saved to last 3 months comfortably, and 4 with a bit of scrimping, before I would have to go beg people for help. I'm pretty sure I can find something to do, given that much lead time.
And I have more time for writing, now.
For example, I've started chapter 10 of "Secrets," which involved, among other things, me looking over my outline and realizing I'd completely bollixed the timing of Ginny's recovery of the diary. She leaves it with Harry for nearly two months before she ransacks his things. So I had to fix some stuff in the plan for chapter 10, but on the bright side, I now have a solid outline for chapter 11, which had previously been unspeakably vague.
Also, I am picking at "Harvest" and "Apartment Manager" chapter 14.
And reading stuff. Like War and Peace. Dad's copy was the Maude translation, but the library has a translation by Constance Garnett, and they don't use the same Anglicizations of various names, which is a little odd to encounter in the middle of a story. In any case, I'm about halfway through Part Three, and the battle of Austerlitz is about to start.
The writing is still a bit slow, and there's sometimes a sense of intellectual remove (Tolstoy as Author, looking down on his creations), but it definitely pulls you in.
