Things not to do when you have to go open the store at 7:00am, #43: wake up at 2am from a dream about a rock band on a colony planet that's under attack by aliens and go, "Oh my god, so that's how Jenny's music got famous and why anyone cares about her song lyrics and her opinion about the aliens! And! And they should be like Pink Floyd and split acrimoniously, but then unlike Pink Floyd, they can get back together after a while and be a band again for twenty years until the keyboardist dies, and maybe Jenny and the keyboardist kind of have a thing together even though the band was really all the guitarist's idea (and he writes most of the music, though Jenny writes the lyrics, and they clash a lot, which is what led to the split), and--"

I spent about two hours outlining the history of this imaginary band. Then I remembered I had to open the store, and that I'd only gone to bed shortly past midnight.

*headdesk*

Still, it's nice to find renewed life in a mostly sidelined old story idea. :-)

I am slow about writing actual stories. I can whip up backstory at the drop of a hat, though... which is not always the most useful talent, but it does provide me with hours of amusement. :-)

There's a story behind both last night's dream and "Deliverance," the short story it fits into (which was itself loosely based on a semi-nightmare I had, maybe a decade ago, that left me with two verses of a song and a very vivid image of a woman using a garden rake to mutiliate a blobby, blue-gray, tentacled alien), but it's long, involved, and rather boring, so I won't go into it here.

That I bet. :) I think I actually can relate a bit - I mean, I'm super, super slow/lazy at writing, but every now and then another piece of the puzzle will just pop up in my mind.
