I think I may have to retitle my in-progress Star Trek: AOS fic, because it is becoming more about Spock and his complicated relationship to being Vulcan as seen through the grieving process, than it is about Spock grieving for a specific person or being comforted by Uhura. I still want to quote Edna St. Vincent Millay, but I may have to use a different line from "Dirge Without Music."

Or maybe I could just call it something else entirely and use the poem as a block quote at the beginning or end of the story? Hmm. That has possibilities.

Anyway, this thing is now 3,375 words long, and I'm not even halfway through the damn story. See, I went back to elaborate on something I'd previously summarized in two sentences, and those scenes ended up taking something like 1,600 words in expanded form, and totally shifting the mood emphasis of the story. (Writing is weird like that.) I may yet decide to split this into more than one story, in which case I have the original two sentences on file as an alternate scene, but whatever.

I fully expect to burn out on writing Star Trek fic within a couple weeks to a couple months -- this is the usual pattern to my serial obsessions -- but it's certainly fun while it lasts!
