Stuff that I am writing (or planning to write):
1. So I had six request!fics to work on. Five of them took me, oh, an hour each, tops (plus a bit more time for revision, because I am an inveterate nitpicker). The sixth one, for
valles_uf is still not done, and is now at 5,775 words in rough draft. *headdesk* Clearly my subconscious got away from me at some point, especially since it's a Star Trek: AOS fic that includes no canon characters or settings. (The Enterprise is at least mentioned in the second half of the story, and its imminent arrival is an important plot point, but I am as yet undecided whether the ship and its crew will actually appear on-page.) So this is going to be an approximately 8,000 word story (or more! argh!) that maybe three people in the world will have any interest in reading. (Two of them being me and
valles_uf.)
*headdesks some more*
At least it is an interesting story so far? I mean, if you look at it as original science fiction (kind of on a wavering line between space opera, hard sf, and sociological sf with a medical bent), I think it isn't half bad. And come to think of it, it would not be too difficult to yank out the Star Trek elements altogether and market the thing as original sf.
...
Hmm. I will have to think about that further.

2. In less frustrating news, I have my Yuletide assignment. Working on the theory that all characters and pairings can be made interesting if approached the right way (or at least are a useful challenge to write), I signed up to write 'any' characters in all 48 fandoms I offered to write for. Then I spent a couple days kicking myself over a few of the more obscure ones, wondering why I thought I would be able to manage them.
I did not get matched on those fandoms.
(I am unsure whether I am relieved or disappointed, oddly enough. Sometimes panic and unfamiliarity are kind of fun, in a twisted way, and I do like challenging myself as a writer. *grin*)
The fandom I did get matched on is actually something I have thought about writing for unprompted a few times, except that I find its canon satisfying enough that the urge to tinker with it via fanfiction was never strong enough to overcome my general laziness. But now I have a prompt, and I already have a few thoughts about approach points, so I will need to refresh my familiarity with canon over the next couple weeks, and then I will pick an idea and run with it.
