Ch. 14 of "Secrets" is currently at 13,000 words in rough draft. What I did today was edit 100 or so words out of early sections, mostly trimming interjections, qualifiers, and general roundabout diction, and then write 550 new ones in my assymptotic approach to the ending. I should perhaps have skipped right to the Hogwarts Express, but the confrontation-with-Daphne scene ends with Ginny still emotionally all over the place, and I want to wrap up some background characters and minor plot threads before everyone leaves for the summer. I also want to give Ginny those two weeks of breathing space to get her equilibrium back.
My plan for Saturday is to write the Hogwarts Express scene, the Weasley family reunion scene, and the return to the Burrow. (...Perhaps Bill and Charlie show up briefly? No, wait, they're in the epilogue. But they send letters, I'm sure, or maybe splurge on firetalking so they can get a bit of personal contact with Ginny. Eh. I will figure it out when I get there.)
And then the chapter will be done, and I can print it out and start ripping it to shreds.
...
Fair warning: none of my plans survive contact with reality. *wry*
