We arrived on the island about 4pm yesterday. Dad turned on the electricity while Mom and I unloaded the boat. We all hauled stuff up from the dock -- all forty-five steps of the staircase -- and then Mom started unpacking, taking down the winter curtains, and putting away groceries while Dad and I primed the well pipe, screwed the pump together, and turned on the water. Around 7pm, Mom and Dad headed back across the lake to pick up my Aunt Cara (Mom's little sister), who is staying with us this week. Meanwhile, I strung up the summer curtains in the two upstairs rooms. We had frozen pizza and salad for a late dinner.
I slept in until almost 11am today, catching up on lost sleep from the previous week. My parents and Aunt Cara also got a slow start, though, so I wasn't too far behind them.
This afternoon Dad and I attached the bottom railings of the staircase down to the dock, removed the covers from the kitchen skylight and the chimney, and helped three teenage boys haul forty 80lb bags of quickset concrete (just add water!) up from the dock, in preparation for the man who is coming tomorrow to repair our chimney so it won't keep pulling the whole cabin sideways as it leans for lack of a proper foundation. Mom and Cara raked leaves and generally cleared the yard and paths around the cabin. Dad also went into town briefly to buy some alcohol, a newspaper, and some doughnuts for a makeshift lunch.
(Also, before going outside to work -- and consequently dousing myself in bug spray -- I tried on a bagfull of clothes Cara brought from Chicago. They are the byproduct of a moth infestation she had a few months ago, which required her to wash all her clothing in very hot water; some of the items shrank so she couldn't wear them anymore. So I have acquired four new t-shirts and one new shirt with three-quarter-length sleeves. I am not sure I will be able to fit them into my suitcase going home, but I do plan to leave one of my four vacation-reading books with Dad, and also to recycle a bunch of magazines I brought, so perhaps I will find space somehow.)
Now we are getting ready to grill steak and have salad, corn, and beans for dinner, which should be not only tasty but interesting, since Aunt Cara likes to experiment with food and tends to make even ordinary dishes slightly odd. :-)
