Last year I wrote And Both Shall Row as a Yuletide treat for [livejournal.com profile] lesserstorm. It's about an unexpected reunion between Calliope and Westerly, the main characters of Susan Cooper's YA novel Seaward.

The thing is, the posted story was only part of what I wrote -- I started out trying to explain what Cally and West did when they got back to their own world at the end of the book, and how they wound up in the jobs they had when they met again... but those sections just made the story feel unbalanced, as if it should continue on past the moment of reunion. So I chopped them out and replaced the infodump with a couple lines of dialogue, which worked much better.

But, you know, I still had the opening sections floating around my hard drive, and I kind of like them, so I've tidied them up a bit and am now tossing them out for the world at large to ignore. *grin* As before, I am assuming that Cally is from England, Westerly is from Pakistan, and Seaward is set somewhere between 1978 and 1982, in the years following General Zia ul-Haq's coup.
