some days I hate my job
Apr. 28th, 2011 12:38 amWork sucked today. Let me list the ways:
1. Allergy season has started, so I had to take Benadryl in order to not be scratching my eyes out -- this year my symptoms are leaning toward dry, itchy eyes rather than incessant sneezes, a perpetually runny nose, or the horrific full-body itch I had a couple years ago -- which meant I was half-asleep through much of the afternoon. Always fun.
2. There was a brief power outage early in the morning, courtesy of the line of thunderstorms that was going through the area, which left several of the ceiling lights out and humming ominously all afternoon.
3. It was admittedly hard to hear the ominous lights over the air conditioner and the floor fan, which we had on because otherwise it would have hit 85 degrees indoors. And of course, this being the start of air conditioner season, the pipes have clogged up over the winter and the AC is leaking all over the back room floor and dripping down into the basement, so we had to set out buckets and mop up puddles every hour or two. Blecch.
4. Our owner has acquired a habit of going to auctions and buying tons of useless dollar store reject items, which we are then required to display and sell. Why we need things like sixty copies of a single bad paranormal romance book, or Syracuse souvenir coffee mugs (in Ithaca, honestly, how stupid is that?), or a couple dozen sheets of window stickers for the Hoosiers basketball team (again, in Ithaca -- for this, Syracuse would actually make sense, but the Hoosiers?) is beyond me. But we got in eight totes of junk today, and PM and I put it all on the shelves.
At least the oversize graduation greeting cards may actually sell. It's getting to that time of year.
5. The book delivery was all messed up. The delivery driver swears he gave us three totes, but we only got two -- and they were packed all upside-down and backwards, too, so it took me forever to figure out what we had and hadn't actually received.
6. And then, on top of everything else, just as I was getting ready to leave, a woman who has been banned from the store (for shoplifting) came in and brazenly attempted to buy rolling tobacco. I told her she was banned -- that we had her on tape stealing cigarettes, and that I'd caught her red-handed slipping a chocolate bar into her jacket pocket -- and she had the nerve to say, "But that was a long time ago," as if we should forget that she's a crook just because a few months have passed.
Twit.
A very frustrating day, all in all.
But! I am now in my parents' house in New Jersey. I am planning to spend Thursday doing nothing but washing laundry, writing fanfiction, and playing with my parents' dog. Friday is for breakfast with Susan, visits to a couple local museums during the day, and a dinner party with family friends at night. Saturday my parents and I drive back to Ithaca and do touristy things all afternoon, after which they return to New Jersey and leave me in my natural car-less state. *grin*
And then life goes back to normal on Sunday. Hopefully work will be less frustrating too.
