wherein Liz admits defeat in re: summer
Jul. 6th, 2012 12:50 amIt was literally too hot to sleep until after 3am last night. I was physically unable to achieve more than a thin, restless doze cluttered with interminable, hazy frustration dreams, even with a fan aimed right at me from about five feet away. Fortunately I did not need to be at the smoke shop until noon, and somewhere around 3am my bedroom cooled the vital fraction that let me actually fall asleep (though still intermittently) and remained below that threshold (approximately 85 degrees Fahrenheit, for the record) until I had to get up around 11am, so I was not a total zombie at work. Just 1/3 of a zombie, and a bit less than that once I got some caffeine into my body.
God I love caffeine.
This morning I called my landlords to ask about buying and installing an air conditioner, because I swear every summer this past decade has been a little worse than the previous one, and enough is fucking enough. A small window unit cannot possibly use all that much more electricity than four fans running 24/7. It's not as if I'd even set the thermostat very low -- if I can keep my apartment below, say, 76, that'd be peachy. I can even program the ac to have 80 as the default temperature between noon and 6pm, when I am almost never here and therefore don't need to use my computer. (Said computer will not function in a room above 80 degrees; if off, it won't turn on, and if on, it will blue screen of death at me, frequently accompanied by hideous noises of the beeping, whining, or clicking types. It will survive in a "sleeping" state up to about 90 degrees, thus preserving all my open windows and tabs... so long as I don't try to wake it before the temperature drops; otherwise it's instant blue screen party time.)
Hopefully I will hear back from my landlords tomorrow, whereupon I can start comparison shopping.
