Susan and I had lunch at Bagel Chateau, after which we dropped by her family's house to say hi to her dog and cat. Then we tried to go to the Morris Museum, only to discover that it was closed from August 19 through September 3. :-( So we went to the duck pond instead. I think its official designation is the Loantaka Brook Reservoir, but everyone calls it the duck pond because that's what it is. It is part of a system of bike trails through some tame forest land and various small parks. So we walked around for an hour or so, talking and catching up. Then we drove to Florham Park for gelato (or an American approximaton thereof, anyway), after which I went back to my parents' house, sorted their mail (which I had picked up en route to lunch), watered their plants, folded the rest of my laundry, and then hit the road.
I took the regular route back, and I can safely say that while the road work sites would be murder in heavy traffic, they were no problem at all this evening. Traffic was quite light all the way from Madison to Ithaca, in fact! My suspicion is that any people traveling for the Labor Day weekend left this morning and were already at their destinations by the time I was on the road.
---------------
In other news, I wrote another 350 words of "Secrets" ch. 15 -- I decided to skip a scene with Xanthe because the only real point of it would've been for Ginny and Xanthe to agree to correspond over the summer and that's easy enough to do in a couple lines of dialogue while they wait for the Hogwarts Express. Which is, in fact, what I wrote instead. :-) Now I have to write the second Ginny-and-Daphne scene, after which I can move on to stealing canon setting and dialogue wholesale with the bit where Ginny reveals Percy's crush on Penelope Clearwater. And then it's Burrow stuff, after which all that's left is the epilogue in Egypt. (The epilogue exists partly for thematic reasons, and partly because I wanted to get Bill and Charlie on-page at least once, since Ginny's relationships with her family members have been such a big part of this story.)
4,850 words so far. That leaves... at least 4,000 more in ch. 15, plus whatever length the epilogue ends up being. That is not a mountain. That is not even a molehill. That is EASY.
I can do this! I will do this!
Please, please, everybody: help me out. I am going to try writing at least a couple hundred words of "Secrets" every day until I am done. If I haven't posted with my daily word count, POKE ME UNTIL I WRITE SOMETHING. PLEASE.
