I voted before going in to work today. I got up 45 minutes early, just in case there were lines, but while my polling place seemed fairly active -- people kept arriving and leaving all the time I was there -- I was the only person at the table for my... I forget the exact terminology, but sub-ward, maybe? Ithaca has five wards, each of which elects two Common Council members, and each ward is subdivided into sections which I think have something to do with alderpersons. Which was irrelevant outside of Ward 4 (which had some kind of by-election today), except insofar as one's sub-ward determines which book contains any given voter's name.
Anyway, I voted. Yay voting! I also bought some utterly bizarre animal-shaped cookies -- I swear to god, they looked and felt like oatmeal cookies but they tasted like cornbread -- plus a banana muffin from the bake sale, because it is good to support one's local PTA. Plus who doesn't like banana muffins? :-)
I then did my best to ignore the election for the next nine hours, because A) I don't like listening to talk radio at work and B) prolonged stress is unhealthy.
The annoying thing is that now that I am home and actively looking online, I can't find a damned thing that will tell me who my new US Representative is! All I can find are fucking poll sites. I mean, I can find out that Shinagawa won Tompkins County, which was never in question, but I cannot find results for the actual race as a whole. Some of the confusion is probably due to redistricting -- I am now in the 23rd congressional district, which is not the same as the old 23rd congressional district, since Rep. Maurice Hinchey retired and the state legislature therefore divvied the pieces of his former district between other regions -- but even so, where are my results?
Who designed this damn stupid internet anyway?!?!?!
ETA: A-ha! Got the Huffington Post to cough up state-by-state individual house race results here. Currently Reed is leading Shinagawa by under 2,000 votes with about 70% of precincts reporting -- about 88,000 to 86,200. Which is a ridiculously small margin, particularly with 30% of the vote still unknown... but I think the non-reporting counties are Allegany and Chautauqua, which will probably go Republican, so. *sigh* Oh well, it's still a pretty respectable showing on Shinagawa's part.
Also it looks like Obama has probably won? I am not sure I quite believe that yet, but please let it be true. I do not want to wake up Wednesday in a world where Mitt Romney will be my new president.
