I need to buy a rake, I think, and research how Ithaca deals with fallen leaf removal. I mean, Landlord Dude will probably take care of stuff within a week or two, but he does have a bad shoulder and back, and I get very tired of leaf clutter all over everything. I swept the front steps and the sidewalk today, and sort of got those leaves into four rough piles, but the yard is still strewn with tree detritus and the point of a leaf pile is to gather clutter for removal, not just to have a pile killing the grass trapped underneath it. :-/

While fighting the leaf infestation, I found some interesting junk buried in the hedges and on the porch, including a large wicker basket, a bright blue tote bag, a small plastic unicorn, and a plastic thing that looks like a gravy boat except with holes in the base like a colander. I have no idea what it's for. But I put the items into the basket, set the basket in the main stairwell, and tagged it with a note explaining that these are things I found while sweeping leaves and would people please claim whatever belongs to them.

There's also a window fan and a toy fake bow-and-arrow set that were lying on the strip of lawn between the sidewalk and the street, around on the north side of the house. I moved them to the east side and propped them against a tree for increased visibility. Hopefully some enterprising soul will pick them up. (Ithaca, you see, has a long-established culture of putting random items out next to the street for anyone who wants them. I think it comes of being a college town -- students are always leaving stuff when they move out, or trying to furnish apartments on tiny budgets.)

...

In other news, tonight I am going to my church's annual service auction. I am not going to bid on anything -- which I will ensure by not picking up either an item catalog or a bidding number. Instead, I am taking a book and waiting around until the auction is done, because I agreed to do clean-up on the theory that social participation is a good thing. (I suspect I would feel better about this on a warmer night...)
