work uncertainties
Apr. 22nd, 2019 10:13 pmAccording to Aunt Boss, New Hire called in last Tuesday with a somewhat flimsy excuse. She was also 15 minutes late on Saturday, and also didn't finish a very simple task I gave her (namely, taking handwritten data from a clipboard and entering it into a spreadsheet). These are not great signs. On the other hand, she was suffering from bad hayfever and then a bit woozy from the Benadryl I gave her, so maybe it was just a bad day. *hands* Anyway, I am strongly hoping she works out despite this slightly rocky beginning, both because she's nice and I like people to do well, and because I really want to have someone else around so I have the option of occasionally taking a Saturday off to go do personal stuff.
The immediate issue is that I need to take Saturday, May 4 off because that's the weekend Susan is visiting and we have plans to do Things -- specifically, the Cayuga Wine Trail's wine & herb fest event -- so I really cannot be at the office. And I want New Hire to be there so we're not randomly closed for a whole day!
*sigh*
I dunno, I don't think my job is especially difficult, but it does involve a whole bunch of separate aspects/tasks that all need to be mastered, and which don't always have any intuitive connection to each other. And Mom Boss has been away on vacation this past week, so Aunt Boss hasn't had the time to show New Hire as much stuff as she otherwise might have done (to say nothing of the missing day). But I feel like... I am pretty sure I asked Miss Cactus more questions about what we do and how we do it in my first weeks on the job, and also read the job manual several times, poked the Gmail account to figure out the canned messages, and messed around with a bunch of folders and spreadsheets to see what information we stored and how it was organized. I'm quite sure Miss Goldberry was also more interested and persistent about learning how stuff worked. Even the previous New Hire (who didn't work out) was more proactive.
...
I suppose we'll see what happens.
