Kasumi has amazingly good luck, she's pretty, and people tend to like her at first sight. Yukiko and Ame would probably hate her if she weren't so nice as well. Ame's sense of humor comes from a throwaway line in "Apartment Manager" where Yukiko mentions that she did something stupid and embarrassing in her first chuunin exam, which Ame teased her about for weeks.

I wanted them to be genuine friends, so it's plausible for Yukiko to tie herself into guilt-stricken knots when they die facing Kyuubi several years later.
