It's time for the continuing adventures of Liz and her reading list! These are the books I read in July 2008. (Click on the cuts for summaries and/or reactions.)

New: 2
---Classic Guitar Construction, Irving Sloane (nonfiction: how to make an acoustic guitar, with lots of illustrations. This would undoubtedly make more sense if I had more than the most rudimentary knowledge of wood-crafting, but I read it mostly to get the right words for faking any necessary discussion of guitar-making in my Ekanu stories.)

---God's Problem: How the Bible Fails to Answer Our Most Important Question -- Why We Suffer, Bart D. Ehrman (nonfiction: Ehrman, a former evangelical Christian, discusses how he lost his faith and then explicates various Biblical answers to the problem of suffering. I have always been interested in theology and ethics, as well as literary and historical/sociological analysis, so this book is right up my alley, though a bit more conversational and citation-light than I prefer. It's also a very nice overview of how religious perspectives in the Judeo-Christian tradition changed over the centuries.)

Old: 4
---Dealing with Dragons, Patricia C. Wrede (fantasy: Enchanted Forest Chronicles volume 1, in which Princess Cimorene runs away from home to be the princess of the dragon Kazul, and foils a plot by evil wizards. Also featuring Morwen, a witch.)

---Searching for Dragons, Patricia C. Wrede (fantasy: Enchanted Forest Chronicles volume 2, in which Cimorene meets Mendanbar, the king of the Enchanted Forest, and they search for Kazul, who may or may not have been kidnapped by wizards. Also featuring Morwen and Telemain, a magician.)

---Calling on Dragons, Patricia C. Wrede (fantasy: Enchanted Forest Chronicles volume 3, in which Cimorene, Morwen, Kazul, Telemain, some cats, and a hapless enchanted rabbit go on a quest to retrieve Mendanbar's sword from the wizards.)

---Talking to Dragons, Patricia C. Wrede (fantasy: Enchanted Forest Chronicles volume 4, which picks up the story 17 years later and resolves the not-exactly-a-cliffhanger ending of the third book. Featuring Daystar, Cimorene and Mendanbar's son; Shiara, a fire-witch with uncertain control of her magic and her manners; and a nameless young dragon.)

July Total: 6 books (plus several magazines, a few newspapers, and a lot of fanfiction)

Year to Date: 70 books (42 new, 28 old)
