I think the reason the first two books are so short is that Rowling was still learning to write novels and didn't realize she could let the story breathe a little -- she basically tells what happened, one event after another, and never pauses to let the characters contemplate or react to those events.

I actually liked Harry's portrayal in OotP. Well, let me clarify that. I found him incredibly annoying, but also much more realistic than his previous 'nothing touches me' attitude, so I appreciated being annoyed... if that makes any sense!
