An email received from my father (slightly edited to remove identifying names):

Dear Liz,

Last night I used some of the time that your mother's plane was delayed by attending a talk on science & religion at Drew. While looking around to see if people were checking coats and wondering when to go in and claim a seat I saw Susan and talked with her awhile. She was looking to meet a college friend who is a grad.-theo. student at Drew.

It's a curious "milestone" in getting older - my kid's buddy goes from being someone I run into in the status as kid-with-other-kids not just to someone I run into as college-kid/young adult home for the holidays at the home of her parents (or at Cat's parents') but now to someone who is just another adult whom I run into independently, in some ways on a par with the rest of last night's audience which included people who were senior faculty at Drew before you and she were born.

love,
Dad

...He's right, as far as I'm concerned. It is a weird feeling to start interacting with your friends' parents as fellow adults who've just run into each other around town, so I imagine the reverse must be equally true.

In other news, I am trying desperately to focus on "Secrets" and not get swept up by a horribly compelling idea for a version of a Narnia genderswap that I haven't seen done before and which I very badly want to write because it would allow me to do all kinds of meta on the series without having to, you know, actually write out logical essays and such-like. (Of course, I'd have to write a novel... but somehow that argument is not making much headway in convincing my subconscious to let me be. Argh!)
