It's a great series for fic, because Takahashi's walking that line between angst and melodrama. That means she hints at a lot of character possibilities, and gives people fascinating backgrounds, but never stops the action/comedy momentum long enough to explore things in detail.
So there are TONS of opportunities for stories. And AUs of all the dramatic moments. And wildly-differing-yet-still-canonically-supported character interpretations. And filler stories, since the series is kind of a timeline-what-timeline production.
