Diana Wynne Jones is an amazing writer -- inventive, funny, insightful, truthful, and always, always clear. I love her books, especially all the standalones. My personal favorites are The Homeward Bounders, Dogsbody, Archer's Goon, Howl's Moving Castle, Fire and Hemlock, and maybe Hexwood (which confused me horribly the first time through, but was brilliant the second time around, once I knew the trick). I confess to never having read the Dalemark tetralogy, nor several of the Chrestomanci series (of which I like The Lives of Christopher Chant best in the main sequence, and Witch Week best of the ancillary novels).
Anyway, she's British, so maybe it won't be too hard to find her books in France? (If all else fails, there's always amazon.com or its European offshoots.)
