[Linkspam] Sassafrass
May. 9th, 2009 02:41 amSassafrass is an a capella group, founded at Bryn Mawr, that performs mostly original songs. My friend Cat was one of the members for a while, and is one of the singers on their first CD, Solitary Dancer, released in 2001. I bought a copy of that CD, initially more to show willing than because I was particularly enthused by the idea, and then ended up listening to it a lot because while the singing is occasionally awkward, the music is intricate and lovely and the lyrics are fascinating.
What I did not know is that at least some of the members kept the group alive after graduating -- they do occasional performances at cons and stuff like that -- and they released a second CD, Firebrand, last year. And, as you can tell from the links in this post, they have a website, which was also news to me. *grin* I have been poking around on it tonight with great pleasure.
In conclusion: I think I know one thing I will ask for as a Christmas present this year.

(Their website seems to have vanished off the internet, or I would link you.) I heard them in concert a couple times back in New Jersey, because they are (or were) loosely associated with liberal religion as well as the more general feminist and lesbian rights movements. I own and love How Can I Keep From Singing? which is one of their CDs. (Amazon has little 29-second excerpts of the songs.) Unfortunately, I think their founder either recently died or is dying, and they may have disbanded. :-(
