I don't know how convincingly it can be done... the whole trilogy has such an air of tragedy about it that finding a "happy" in there doesn't seem reasonable. Honestly, I do think Erin/Aeriel is more likely, although on a platonic sense. Aeriel is, after all, not human anymore so she may not feel certain drives? And I would SO love to see a "50 years later" fic where Irrylath and Aeriel are kind of STUCK together.
I'm very happy you used Yuletide as a coping mechanism, and I don't think it's weird that you had a happy Christmas - grief comes and goes in weird stages.
