You would really only have to read The Magician's Nephew, which is not exactly a long book. :-) It features Jadis, the last Empress of Charn, who's awesome (also evil, but mostly awesome); Polly Plummer, who is by far the sanest person in the story, though she's not always able to stop Digory Kirke from being stupid; Digory himself, who tries hard to do the right thing and is desperately worried about his dying mother; and Digory's Uncle Andrew (the magician of the title), a wonderfully petty villain, who shifts from creepy to pathetically ridiculous as events spin out of his control. Also, there is a flying horse. :-)
