The Enchanted Forest Chronicles are a set of four books by Patricia C. Wrede -- Dealing with Dragons, Searching for Dragons, Calling on Dragons, and Talking to Dragons -- which as a whole chronicle the war between the Society of Wizards and the Enchanted Forest (plus their allies, the dragons of the Mountains of Morning). The world is clearly based on standard fairy-tale tropes, but takes great glee in subverting and mocking them in a loving and lighthearted way. I love them fiercely because they include a bunch of interesting and proactive female characters, and also because the protagonists value practicality and often solve problems by taking a moment to stop, think, and then do the sensible thing instead of going for Drama or Angst. :-)
