Long story short, I went to the dentist this morning for my regular six-month checkup, and mentioned that on Monday night I'd felt a sudden stabbing pain and pressure between my left upper canine and first premolar, which made no sense since I'd been eating a steak roll at the time (which is the softest and least granular food ever). The hygienist duly checked and confirmed my suspicion: one of my fillings has come loose, though it hasn't yet completely detached from the tooth in question.

(The filling is not actively stabbing me right now, btw; I was able to floss it into a more comfortable position.)

So I have a new appointment for next Thursday morning, to get the filling removed and replaced. Nrgh, stupid unexpected medical expenses...

On the bright side, X-rays revealed no new cavities, and my intermittent flossing and use of fluoride rinse seems to be working well enough for my gums. I should still step up on those things, though. I have the whole "brush twice daily" thing down cold, but I've always been kind of lackadasical about the rest. I could get away with that in NJ, since Madison fluoridates its municipal water supply, but for whatever reason -- could be conservative resistance, could be New Age hippy shit -- Ithaca does NOT fluoridate its water, which is why I ended up with cavities in the first place, grrr.
