This is the time of year when my apartment becomes infested by tiny spiders. At first they are not even the size of baby fruit flies. They drift randomly through the air like dust particles, to which they bear an uncanny resemblance, or drop unexpectedly from the ceiling and tentatively explore my neck and arms until I squish them.

In a week or two, they will have grown to perhaps the size of my pinky fingernail and turned sort of translucent yellow-brown. I will begin finding them skittering around my shower, where, again, I will squish them.

(I am generally in favor of live-and-let-live when it comes to spiders -- they eat mosquitoes and flies, you see -- but anything that touches my skin or surprises me in the shower trips my "DEATH EVERYWHERE!!!" reflex.)

Air conditioning drastically reduces the number of insects and moths that get into my apartment and bumble drunkenly through the air at stupid hours of the night, but it does nothing to mitigate the annual spider hatching. :-(

*delicate shudder* Yeah, I have a deal with the ones in my house. They don't web anywhere I'll run into it and say out of sight, and I don't break out the poison death spray or the fly swatter or the vacuum. Fortunately, in a way, most of what we get in here are trap spiders, but they /do/ grow to alarming sizes and when they start colonizing the basement stairway, I'm sorry, but it's poison death spray time. I have laundry to take up and down those stairs, and no wish to have my ankles eyed in a speculative way.

They are completely harmless, I swear! But yeah, not my idea of fun. :-(

I have a similar deal with my spiders -- they keep the webs out of the spaces I actively use, they don't scuttle around right in front of me, and we're good. I do not, however, appreciate being walked upon, or having tiny spiders parasail toward my face. *twitch*

They're very tiny and completely harmless! But yeah, it's a little freaky just for the sheer number of the spiders. And also I have no idea where the egg sac is. I just know that every year at least one mother spider manages to conceal one in a place that gives the baby spiders ready access to my home. :-(

It is definitely a little unnerving to have so many floating around, harmless and tiny though they are.

I think spiders are pretty cool; they eat creatures I hate a LOT more. (For example, do not get me started on flies. Seriously, don't.) But I like them best in out-of-the-way corners, or outside, not scuttling along my arms. :-(

I can sort of relate, I think. One time, I bought a new computer chair secondhand, which was evidently infested with housefly eggs. I did not discover this until several days later, when SUDDENLY, FLIES. EVERYWHERE.

It was horrifying and disgusting. But I got rid of the chair and eventually squished them all, and nothing like it has happened since.

You have to deal with this every year? How on Earth do you cope?

Well, the hatching (and thus the tiny floating spiders) only lasts a couple days; after that they are mostly tucked away in corners or something and I don't notice them until they have grown a bit and begin scuttling around. And they are quite harmless! Which, alas, doesn't stop them from being freaky -- no one expects tiny baby spiders parasailing into their face, after all. Even if I know it happens every year. *sigh*

(Oh god, I would have FLIPPED OUT if that housefly thing had happened to me. I HATE flies. I have a... phobia is the wrong word, since it's a hate-stalk-destroy reaction rather than fear, but it is not entirely rational and not exactly under my control, either. Here is one of my distressing fly stories. I have also been chased through the woods by flies -- yes, literally -- at least five times. Plus I was once bitten so viciously by horseflies in Canada that I had hideously swollen and painful lymph nodes on my neck and shoulders for two days after the event. As I said, I HATE flies.)
