Dave and John both attend landen schools. This works out reasonably well for John, but Dave... is not a good fit. At all. And he knows it, and he has Issues about it. (Dave is all kinds of tangled up about being a Warlord Prince, no matter what he says to anyone else. This gets further tangled up in his Issues about Bro and John and being a knight and being (or not being) a hero. *pets him* On the other hand, I gave him wings. That almost balances out the angst, right? Right???)
Jade's not a Queen, alas; she's just a witch with no special caste. I thought about making her a Priestess (because it's useful to have someone around who has an inborn knack for communing with the Darkness), but she already has the darkest Jewel of all eight kids and I thought it'd be more interesting for them to be missing a role. (Jane is all the boys' promised Queen. This means more for Warlord Princes, btw -- it's like an instant connection, not really a bond but more of a, hmmm, draw? -- but I think it can also apply to Warlords. I am not sure if there's any similar thing that draws witches to a specific Queen, or whether it's an extension of the matriarchal nature of the Blood.)
I love Jade pre-game when she's being all accidentally "oh yes, the world will end and I can see the future and did I mention I know all these personal secrets you never told me because I watch you in my dreams?" spooky-creepy. She reminds me a bit of Aradia when she's in that mode.
Mmm. I meant shields mostly metaphorically -- like, Rose keeps emotional barriers to protect herself and Jade can't get fully inside them because Rose knows Jade is lying to her about something, even if she can't figure out the details. But! You can in fact use Craft to create non-metaphorical shields, to block both magical and physical attacks. Jade has more raw power than Rose, but Rose is a lot better at using Craft; she's had actual lessons and a lot more practice.
Dadbert is awesome, full stop. :-)
I have no idea where the Home Alone thing came from, but suddenly my fingers typed those lines and I couldn't bring myself to delete them. *hands* My brain is a strange and mysterious place some days.
Jade's not really plotting the end of the world, as such. She's just making sure all the predestined events play out smoothly so her friends will be safe when the inevitable happens. :-/ But yeah, John hit a sore point dead center without realizing what he was doing.
I may try to do some 15-minute ficlets for this AU over the next week. We shall see... (I'm inclined to think the trolls are not Blood, but on the other hand it would be so fun to assign them Jewels and castes and... and... no, bad Liz, stop it. *thwaps self, attempts to concentrate*)
