I have just managed to burn water. My entire apartment smells of burnt salt/butter/whatever-they-make-pots-out-of-these-days. The kitchen fan and the open window are not doing much to dissipate the residual smoke.

This is obviously not my day.

Not immediately, but this afternoon I bought five boxes of Thin Mints (mmm, Girl Scout cookies, mmm) so perhaps that was my compensation. *wry*

It was so stupid. I put water on to boil, to make ramen noodles, and then got caught up in reading stuff online -- I think I was zoning more than usual, in an effort (conscious or not) to distract myself from rage and shock over the missing data -- and didn't even notice the time passing or the growing strange smell until I heard the burner make a weird sort of clicking noise and thought, "Oh shit." *headdesk*

But yeah, nothing unfixable in the long run. And it turns out that Best Buy still had a copy of my data! They did successfully get it off my old computer, before they inexplicably didn't bother to transfer it to the external hard drive. So I will pick up my restored writing and pictures tomorrow.

I know it is easy to boil all the water away and do terrible things to your cooking vessels in the process. It's just embarrassing. *headdesk*

And yes, I am still pissed off that the Geek Squad didn't bother to do their job correctly the first time, but at least they are doing it right NOW.

Thus far, I have purchased five boxes of Thin Mints and discovered that Best Buy still had a copy of my real data on their own computers, which they are in process of transferring properly to my external hard drive. So those are two big steps in a better direction. :-)
