Summary: Why does a forger need a totem? (100 words exactly)
---------------------------------------------
On Totems
---------------------------------------------
Mallorie Cobb was the first person to codify the function of a totem -- a small item with a trick known only to its owner, which could be made to behave differently in dreams and reality -- but she wasn't the first to think of the general idea. So far as Eames knew, every forger had hit on the obvious truth that thirty seconds and a mirror would prove whether they were awake or dreaming. (Barring hallucinations, of course.) But that was a bit conspicuous -- a bit rude, maybe a bit unsafe to tip his hand -- so he adopted Mal's version instead.
---------------------------------------------
End of Fic
---------------------------------------------
This is a little thing I wrote ages ago. I don't remember where I intended to go with it, and obviously it never clicked into any kind of larger plot or character study, but it's a complete (albeit tiny) thought as it stands, so whatever, I'm posting it. :-)
