It's taken me far too long to realize this, but I've finally figured out how to write fight scenes.

It's really very simple. See, I say to myself, "Okay, pretend I'm character A, and I have to fight character B. What do I do?" And I use my knowledge of A's skills and weapons, and personality -- and A's knowledge of B's weapons, skills, and personality -- to make a plan. Then I do the same for B. And then I step back, and as the author decide which plan is going to work better.

I cannot believe it's taken me this long to figure that out.

All those weeks of beating my head against walls because characters up and went their own ways in the middle of fights whose outcomes I'd already decided...

Gah.

(Yes, this does mean I've finished two of the fights in the second round. With a bit of luck, I'll have chapter 14 of "Apartment Manager" done tomorrow.)
