Somebody has been setting off firecrackers across the street and I am now typing this one-handed due to unexpected armful of quivering dog.

Oh, boy, do I sympathize. I have one that cowers and one that barks. *sighs* As if either actually helps. ;__; What makes matters worse? We have a neighbor that sets off fireworks every single night.

Yes, you read that right. Every. Single. Night. We theorize he owns a firework store or something because OMG rain, snow, shine, Christmas, or Labor Day - every single night. *more sighing*

Every night?! God love a duck, what is that man thinking? No, scratch that. IS he thinking? Because that is definitely up there in the rankings of extreme un-neighborly behavior.

Does your town have noise and/or nuisance ordinances? Can you report him to the police?

Yeah, I know - and I certainly agree. ;__;

It does, but...it's more of a nuisance to call the police than to just let them go off for a minute and then return to silence. By the time the call was done, the police would never make it in time to catch him and I'm sure they'd just stop coming after a while. *sigh* It wouldn't be so bad if the dogs didn't dislike it so much...and if he didn't do it at like 10:00PM. >.< Urban problems?

I was thinking that rather than try to report each individual instance, you report the pattern. If nothing else, you might be able to get the police to go have a talk with the dude and then tell you what he thinks he's doing.

Then again, it's amazing how easy it is to get used to crazy and inconvenient things. I mean, I lived with a broken silverware drawer for something like eight months because I kept forgetting to call my landlord about it. After a while, I didn't even notice that it was a problem.

I just don't know who it is exactly. We've never seen him - we've only heard him and seen/heard the fireworks.

But I totally understand what you mean! Why do we do that to ourselves? All you had to do was tell the landlord - all I had to do when my car window's regulator broke was fix the damn thing. It's not even that expensive. Like, what the heck brains.

I am glad you are there for her. that kind of thing can be really frightening for dogs and they can really hurt themselves.

According to my parents, if no one is available to hold her, Dottie curls up in a sheltered place -- in a corner, under the furniture, in a closet, etc. -- and shivers until the noise goes away. Sometimes she'll do that even if there's an available lap. I think she's looking for a sense of confinement/shelter; she will go for whatever is closest, and doesn't want to move thereafter even if she might be less upset in a different "safe" place. :-(

But the commotion passed and she is now sleeping peacefully in her own bed. :-)
