Summary: Tabitha Redding mindwalks for the first time. Naturally she chooses her twin as her target. (300 words)

Note: This ficlet is set in an original world for which I've done a bunch of world-building but hardly any actual fiction writing. (Well, not in the past fifteen years, anyway.) The general idea is that the world of Intarre is highly permeable to other worlds, and has also been locked under two worldwide spells -- the Word and the Way -- since the aftermath of a devastating magical war. Tabitha and Thomas Redding are the grandchildren of a sorceress who fled Intarre for Earth. On their thirteenth birthday, Tabitha summons a dragon to take them back. The dragon's price is as yet unknown...

This is an incident from a few years after the twins' arrival in Intarre, when they're around seventeen.

A Dream of Snow
---------------------------------------------

Tabitha closed her eyes under Mistress Seer's spell and focused on her brother.

She dreamed of heat: shimmering distortions in the air, the scorch of stone through the soles of her boots, the crack of lips and skin sucked dry of water. The sun beat down from a bleach-white sky, each ray falling like a hammer onto the suffering earth. Even shade was no surcease, when every breath cut her lungs like branding irons.

Tom was in the desert, then, south of the Black Tower. Tabitha wondered what lesson he was meant to be learning.

She felt strange, tangled, like a net spread gossamer fine to ensnare and enslave. Their shared dreams were wild magic, a delicate balance between her will and his where they met in a neutral place-that-was-not. This spell was patterned, bound, shaped to tip that balance entirely in her favor. Tabitha rode as a shadow in her brother's mind and he could neither sense nor stop if she opened the book of his memory and turned through every page.

She would have, once, and never stopped to think it might be a violation. Even last year, she would have read and asked forgiveness later.

Mistress Seer had said nothing about what she could or could not touch. She wondered if this was a test. She wondered what action would let her pass.

Delicately, Tabitha shaped a thought of winter -- a night sky strewn with all the stars of the ever-frozen southern plains -- and spun it outward into her brother's mind.

Tom blinked at the phantom chill, and smiled as if another's will in his mind was nothing to fight or fear.

Tab, he said into the void of her presence. I wondered when you'd learn to mindwalk. Make me dream of snow?
