My library didn't have a YA section until I was in high school and thus old enough to feel slightly awkward browsing it. I remember being slightly peeved about its existence, since a bunch of books had to be moved from the children's wing to the main wing in order to create it, which meant I suddenly had no idea where a number of old favorites had gone to. I also disagreed with several of the librarians' choices of what to class as YA and what to leave in the children's wing. *wry*

But I know about wanting to read "up." I first ventured into the adult fiction section when I was... ten, I think, so near the end of fourth grade. I mostly looked for books that had a sci-fi/fantasy sticker on their spines (there was no separate speculative fiction section), and went alphabetically through the shelves, with detours to authors I already knew I liked since I'd read some of their books in my dad's collection.
