December 29: Vorkosigan ladies fic (for [livejournal.com profile] joyeuce01) [Tumblr crosspost]

Summary: In which the Lady Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan greets her friend, Queen Lucy Pevensie of Narnia, upon the latter's visit to Barrayar. (325 words)

Note: This is not a fandom I have practice writing in, so you get a tag scene to an unfinished Narnia/Vorkosigan crossover I once tried to write for [personal profile] rthstewart but stalled out on. (The fragment is available here, and the explanation for the AU is in the post above that comment; just scroll up.)

Of All Possible Worlds...

Though the war was nearly a decade in the past and the Narnian tetrarchs were now close personal friends of Dowager Empress Kareen, the mountain pass between Barrayar and Narnia was still carefully guarded on either end. "Better safe than sorry," Aral said when Cordelia remarked how ridiculous the whole business was, and the time and money that could be saved by dismantling the little forts. "And it's useful to have strong backs nearby in case of more normal disasters."

The narrow, winding pass was notoriously treacherous in rough weather, and there was always the risk of marauders from the Western Wild or Ettinsmoor, so after consideration Cordelia conceded half the point. The border inspections, however, were nothing but belligerent posturing, and she had no patience for that sort of thing anymore.

"Queen Lucy is not carrying any weapons beyond her bow and dagger, nor any magic beyond her cordial," she said as she tugged the young queen away from the protesting fort commander. "This is beyond ridiculous and we're lucky she's too kind to take this treatment as the insult it is."

"But my lady--"

"No. I take full responsibility for disrupting your search. Write a letter of complaint to your general if you must," Cordelia said, and shut him on the other side of the door.

Lucy Pevensie bit her lip, clearly holding back laughter. "It's more of a game than an insult," she said. "But this will save us a day on the journey to Vorbarr Sultana, and so you have my thanks."

"I'm doing it for myself. Even one day fewer for Miles, Gregor, and the rest of their little guerrilla band to take advantage of our absence is priceless, and the sooner Miles gets his annual dose of your cordial, the better," Cordelia said. She tucked Lucy's arm through the crook of her own elbow and strode toward their waiting horses. "Now tell me, what are these rumors I've heard about a White Stag?"

End of Ficlet

...I kind of want to write the rest of that original crossover idea someday, but it would be a novel and I do not have time for more novels, even assuming I could resolve the plot holes that stalled me out the first time. *sigh*
