Today I filed my first two tax returns as a paid tax preparer. They have been accepted by the IRS. And the sky did not fall!

(I've been 'working' for three weeks, but most people don't get their W-2s until late January and there was a computer glitch relating to my NY state paid preparer ID number, so until today I was just doing practice case studies, sitting in to observe other people doing returns, and answering the phone/scheduling appointments for other people.)

It's funny how you can know perfectly well that you can do a thing but still be all twitchy-paranoid until you actually sit down and do it once for real, you know?

I'm still not sure if tax preparation is something I want to do on a continuing basis, but I feel much more confident about getting through the next three months. :D

Hectic! (My office had a full personnel turnover this year, and my state's forms are so far behind on release that we hope we can send off all our state returns today.)

Oh man, why are state forms always so delayed compared to federal? (Answer: because state revenue departments don't have enough staff or funding. But still, so very, very argh.) *sends sympathy*

It's a good skill to have, whether or not you continue in the future.

Yes! I mean, obviously the particular computer program I am now trained to use is proprietary and would not transfer to anything else, but the more general knowledge of tax law (without which you don't know what questions to ask or which forms to pull up) is extremely useful. And proof that one can and has learned to use a whole bunch of proprietary computer programs is always a plus when applying for jobs. :)
