wherein Liz gripes a bunch about taxes
Feb. 26th, 2016 04:56 pmI'd been waiting on two documents before doing my own taxes, and when they arrived two weeks ago, I was all set to get everything filed! And get my refund! ...And then I realized that one of the forms was wrong. *headdesk*
To make a long story short, I had a small company pension from the smoke shop, which I closed last year. I had half the money sent directly to me and the other half sent to the company that manages my Roth IRA. They were both taxable early distributions; the second check just didn't physically pass through my hands because I had a tight time window for getting it to the IRA company.
The IRA company received the check in time and processed it correctly as a normal post-tax contribution. Unfortunately, the pension management company then reported that payment as a non-taxable direct rollover instead of an early distribution. And you can't roll pre-tax money (pension) into a post-tax account (Roth IRA) and not pay taxes on it; that's illegal.
So I had to get a corrected 1099-R form, which has taken about three times longer than it needed to, and also shouldn't have been necessary in the first place because I said VERY CLEARLY back in April 2015 that the money was going to a Roth IRA rather than a traditional IRA. *double headdesk*
And now, of course, I received the corrected form as a .pdf Google Drive file... that I can't open or download in order to finish my return today, because Not the IRS has Google Drive blocked on all company computers. *triple headdesk*
...
At least I'll be able to finish the damn return tomorrow.
ETA: I was able to view and print the revised form at home. I still think it may be a little funny, but the key problem has been fixed and at this point I don't want to jump through any further hoops. If the data produces reasonable-looking results when I enter it into the program, I'm just going to go with this version and be done with the whole thing.
