This isn't a suggestion, but I was recently charmed by a list of names for a girl's pet mice, circa 1968: Mr. Spock, Desilu, Constellation, Eugene McCarthy, and Leila. This was in the memoir Foreign Correspondence, by Geraldine Brooks.

The four spider-plants that sadly perished of parasites were actually theme-named, though it's not obvious at first glance. Basically, I started by numbering them in Japanese and then free-associated from those words. It goes Ichi-->Ichigo-->Strawberry, Ni-->Knights Who Say Ni-->Herring, San-->let's be formal!-->San-san, Shi-->death-->Sandman-->Ankh. If I'd had a fifth and sixth plant at the time, they'd probably have been Chess (Go-->classic board game-->Chess) and Elvis (Roku-->rock-->rock and roll-->Elvis), respectively. *wry*

Shelob, Ungoliant, and Charlotte?

I discounted Shelob and Ungoliant for the same reason I discounted Aragog: they're moderately to extremely unpleasant characters, and there's not a lot of scope in their respective canons for saying, 'unreliable narrator; I can spin this!' the way one can easily do with, for example, the gorgons. (YMMV, obviously!) Similarly, I discounted Cthulhu and Gl'bgolyb (tentacled horrorterror from Homestuck) because I would prefer not to be murdered in my sleep by my own houseplants. *wry*

But Charlotte is a GREAT idea! Thank you!
