Another mercverse story, because it suddenly came clear in my head last night.

Ever since icedark_elf made it clear that the royal family are Cloud's nieces and nephews, not just his cousins (as I'd previously assumed), I've been trying to handwave over that discrepancy. This is, among other things, the product of that handwaving.

Somewhat depressing, along the lines of Yesterday and Tomorrow. You could consider this a companion to that fic, actually.

In RL news, my occasional friend Andrew is going to be in Ithaca this weekend, so we'll spend a couple hours catching up Sunday afternoon before I go to work.

Also, traffic patterns around the Commons are going to be screwed up for a while, because they're knocking down the Green St. Helix and parking garage, and therefore Green St. is closed from Cayuga down to at least the underpass under South Aurora/96B. I don't care much, because I walk everywhere, but this must bollix bus schedules something fierce -- if they go through central Ithaca, they usually stop on Green St., right in front of the library, and now that stop's blocked off.

Oh well, at least the library's still open!

This story is set about ten years before main mercverse canon, insofar as this AU can be said to have any canon. :-) So. "Two Guys and a Girl," in which I bend, staple, and otherwise mutilate normal game canon involving trips to Nibelheim, because seriously, what's the point of crack AUs if you can't play around like this?

My new writing goals:

1. Finish chapter 9 of "Guardian" and chapter 10 of "Lemonade" by Christmas.

2. Finish "Secrets" by my birthday. (Backup plan: finish it by my sister's birthday. Backup of the backup, finish it by the story's 5-year anniversary. Because I have been working on "Secrets" for WAY TOO LONG NOW, and it's getting very embarrassing not to have it done already.)

3. Finish "Undertow" by New Year's.

4. Come up with some sort of ending to "Strange Likenesses" by my birthday, because I don't want to delete it from the internet, but having a permanently unfinished story out there is going to itch like fire at the back of my mind.

Somehow I doubt I'll reach all these goals, but I think having publicly stated them, I'll be a bit more motivated to show some sort of progress.

See? NaNo is good for some things, even if this story is meandering way out to hell and gone. I just hope my subconscious has some sort of conclusion in mind -- there are a couple things that have to happen, and a couple others that I want to have happen, but beyond that I'm really clueless. And you know? The last time I wrote a fanfiction story without any real idea where it was going, it took me three years to finish. Just saying.

This is a little mercverse ficlet that hit me because of icedark_elf's Price of Power, in which she made a stray comparison of Zack to a magpie. The comment!fic version is here. The edited version in this post now has a proper beginning and a bit more detail.
