"Secrets" snippet
Apr. 24th, 2004 08:28 pmSo I'm working on Secrets today, and I suddenly got hit by a scene from chapter 8. Except I'm working on chapter 7. Bother. Anyway, I wrote it down before it could get away, and I thought I might as well put it up here.
It's not terribly spoilerish; just know that it's after Christmas holidays and the third attack (on Justin Finch-Fletchley), Ginny's just found out what's really going on, and Tom has stolen enough of her life that he can sort of manifest himself... but only to her, via their connection.
Um. It occurs to me that I should mention, in case it isn't obvious, that "Secrets" is a sort of behind-the-scenes of "Chamber of Secrets" from Ginny's point of view. It's my big, evil WIP fanfic, and the second fanfic I ever started writing. It goes very slowly, because I am a lazy bum, but I swear to God that it will eventually be finished.

Tom lies to Ginny. Again.

"Of course you've been behind all the attacks, Virginia. Who else could it have been?" Tom smiled mockingly. "I suppose you'll say I was the one who did everything, but we know that isn't true. I can't do anything that YOU don't agree to. I supply the Basilisk; YOU supply the victims."
"But I didn't!" shouted Ginny. "I didn't."
Tom slipped his arm around her shoulder. "Best not to deny these things, Virginia. I recall telling you that you were far too kind to attack a cat. For your conscious mind this may even be true. Your subconscious, however, is far more vicious. The first attack on Mrs. Norris was an accident -- I admit that -- but the subsequent targeting of Harry Potter's enemies? Sheer brilliance. I rather admire your hidden self; she's far more interesting than you."
"I'm going to be expelled!" wailed Ginny, beating her fists against Tom's chest. "It's all your fault and I'm going to be expelled."
Tom lazily fended her off. "I believe we went over this already. I merely supply the means for your actions; I am hardly at fault. The last time I entered the Chamber and called the Basilisk was in 1942, and a girl died because of it. I wonder how far you're willing to go."
---------------------------------------------
No other news, really. Went shopping, replaced the Coke I stole yesterday from somebody. Made nail hooks for the mailbox keys, also, and left a note advising people NOT to use them.
It was a lovely day -- warmish and sunny, but breezy enough that you didn't overheat while walking.
