I think one of the things I dislike most about George W. Bush's government and the current Republican party is that they are trying to take my patriotism away from me. (So are the Democrats, actually.) The right says that you aren't patriotic unless you follow their ideology, and the left says that you can't be proud of a country doing the things we are -- and besides, isn't patriotism kind of arrogant and unjustified and so on.

Damnit, I am proud to be an American. And while I don't like a lot of what my country IS at the moment, there is nothing better than the ideals upon which our nation is founded, and our dream and pledge of freedom and justice. THAT is something worth being proud of, even if we don't always live up to our goals. Patriotism is being proud of what your country is at its best, and about working to keep it focused on those ideals even at its worst.

That concludes my Independence Day rant.

In other news, I've been working more on "Secrets," and am having nasty scene transition problems. Also, the dream scene isn't working properly. I must remember not to listen to Bach concertos while trying to write eerie, creepy nighttime scenes... the moods DO NOT mesh. *sigh*

Also, Cat and Susan and I saw Spider-man 2 last night, which was lots of fun! The ending was a bit muddled and went on too long after the climax, but that didn't really interfere with the film as a whole. Plus, it turns out that Susan WAS able to get tickets for the Sting concert on Wednesday, so we'll all be going together. Cat's Sting evangelism has claimed another victim. *snicker*
