When bringing the dog in this evening, I discovered a nest of baby chipmunks -- mostly because the dog was staring intently at a small patch of moving leaves and dead grass against the house. It was squeaking, and I wondered if she'd managed to corner some small animal.
So I pulled up the covering and found two or three (it was hard to tell; they were wrapped around each other and I didn't want to disturb them) little chipmunks, still young enough that they were mostly gray-brown with only very faint stripes. Oops. I tried to put the nest's roof back together, but I'm not sure I did a very good job.
I dragged the dog back inside, and then covered the disturbed nest with a bit of plywood, to keep the dog away in the future. I hope the babies will be all right despite their scare!
