Wrote 1500 words of "Apartment Manager" last night. Lately I spend all day at work frying my brain -- we're doing QA for several projects right now, so I am doing nothing but staring at line after line of recipe ingredients and checking them against the same lines in the actual database -- so I think it's a case of writing or going crazy from sheer boredom.

I only meant to introduce Naga's fight, but I kind of hit a groove and kept going all the way through. And then Kakashi stuck his nose in again. You know, I never meant for him to be in the story in the first place, but he just will not settle down as a manageable secondary character.

I wish I knew why my subconscious seems to have latched onto him so strongly.

...

Anyway. I've been looking over my fights and they don't quite mesh with Kishimoto's style. Part of this is obviously because I'm writing a story and he's writing-and-drawing a manga. Different media lead to different results; some things can be easily compressed in words but require page upon page of pictures, whereas other things can be shown in one quick image but need a few paragraphs to describe in bare words. But the other part is that I seem to rely more on strategy and a bit less on yelling and hitting things. Some of that is related to the characters I'm using -- they're mostly a couple years older than Naruto's fellow genin, and so aren't quite as excitable -- but I think it's also because I find strategy more interesting (and less difficult) to write than an exchange of blows.

And, well, Shikamaru and Temari's fight aside, it's kind of hard to draw people thinking of clever plans. :-)
