I think I have a love-hate relationship with translation. On the one hand, there's the satisfaction of finding the right word, the fun of playing around with variant connotations, and the interest of getting to read random archaeological trivia. On the other, sometimes the German grammar is just so convoluted, I keep running into technical terms that aren't in my dictionary (which I then have to go translate with the aid of massive books at the library), and somewhere in high school, without quite noticing, I hit the point where I was reading in German instead of translating mentally to English. Which means there are a lot of words I kind of know by context in German but I cannot actually tell you their English equivalent because I never 'learned' them, properly speaking.

*beats head against wall*

Still, it's more good than bad, and it pays well.

Am still singularly uninspired by all my current stories. Did manage to write 500 words of the epilogue to "Apartment Manager," but they were completely and utterly wrong, so I scrapped them.

*beats head some more*

I'm sure I could write if I could work up the motivation to sit down and push through until my brain catches into gear again, but I really don't want to bother. I think I shall go investigate the library's collection of Diana Wynn Jones's books tomorrow instead. I have a yen to reread Jones. I am in a comic fantasy mood.

(On that note, I also want to know what the hell happened to my combined edition of Patricia C. Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles, which seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. I know I had it in New Jersey. It does not seem to be in Ithaca. My conclusion is that Vicky has made off with it and neglected to tell me, but that seems unlikely since she has her own copies of all the books. Truly, it is a mystery.)
