Today we did Advent, which involved making slightly non-traditional Advent calendars. Each day of December (up to Christmas) has a suggested activity to do with family or friends, generally something fun or helpful. These are covered with little sticky papers, and you pull one off each day and then do the activity. Above this is a Christmas tree, which can be colored and so on. (The original idea is to use tiny stickers on the days -- still on their backing -- and then put the stickers on the tree like ornaments, but that's a little more complicated than we wanted to deal with.)

We also talked about solstice and Jesus, and made paper snowflakes, which always goes over well. I stole the extra paper squares -- we had only 5 kids today -- so I can make a few more at home. I like making snowflakes. :-D

--------------------------------

I have now read 5 of Guy Gavriel Kay's 9 books: Tigana, The Lions of Al-Rassan, Sailing to Sarantium, Lord of Emperors, and The Last Light of the Sun. I like The Lions of Al-Rassan and the Sarantine Mosiac duology best; they made me cry. The Last Light of the Sun has something that I think is nearly an unqualified happy ending, which felt slightly bizarre after the other four books. However, it also is set in the same world as The Lions of Al-Rassan and the Mosaic, and the little reference back to Crispin's actions at the end of Lord of Emperors... Kay might as well have ripped my heart out and danced on it. Ow. Just ow. (On the other hand, the reference to Rustem was squee-worthy cool. It balances, I suppose.)

Today I acquired two books by James Branch Cabell, whom I have heard praised in various places despite his obscurity. We shall see how I like him... after I read Kay's A Song for Arbonne, that is.

Oh. And even though the entire Tompkins County library system had only one copy of Lois McMaster Bujold's Mirror Dance, and said copy has been missing for at least six months, the library in Madison is a good little library and has a copy. Which I checked out and read over Thanksgiving. *hugs Mark* *hugs Miles too* It was hard to get through the early chapters, because I knew how wrong everything was going to go (this is what comes of reading series out of order) and I HATE watching characters do stupid things that are easily avoidable, but after that, it was engrossing. And almost doubly painful on Miles's sections, since I know how things DIDN'T go back to normal for him afterwards. *hugs both brothers again*
