Oddly enough, for a book involving the revenge killing of a master criminal, the overall structure is a set-up for one immense practical joke. Gersen carries out the punchline, despite the fact that he hated and killed the criminal who set it up.

Jack Vance may be slightly unbalanced, but it's definitely in a good way. :-)
