The Geek Squad guys have been and gone. They ran a long set of diagnostics and concluded that it was a software issue rather than a hardware issue, and hopefully it's been corrected by the updates I just downloaded and installed.

(I am also going to defrag the computer this afternoon; that may help as well.)

If the problem comes back a third time, though, they said I should probably get the software cleared out and reinstalled altogether. I am crossing my fingers that my computer stays healthy!

I spent most of their visit dusting, which is a chore I really don't like -- it makes me sneeze something awful, both during and for nearly an hour afterwards -- and which I therefore do not do nearly as often as I ought to. My apartment is now full of shiny, clean shelves and table surfaces, as well as clean baseboards, clean strips of hardwood floor under my radiators, and clean corners that were formerly the abode of ancient cobwebs. (I love my apartment, but it has a weird layout that involves far too many corners.)
