thoughts while reading YuYu Hakusho
Mar. 8th, 2006 11:26 amI have a persistent 'hearing' problem when reading YuYu Hakusho: Koenma's name. Nearly nine years of German lessons and literature classes make me read it as an Anglicized version of Könma, the way schoen is an Anglicized spelling of schön, for example. So I pronounce it, in my head, something like Kern-ma, which is wrong, and I know it's wrong, and it bugs me and then I have to go reread any scene's he's in and make sure to mentally pronounce his name correctly -- Ko-e-n-ma -- and this is such a stupid thing and wastes so much time that there are no words, and that irritates me too, and...
*headdesk*
Speaking of problems with YuYu Hakusho, is there a metaphysical reason Botan couldn't just summon her oar and fly Keiko out of trouble during the Four Beasts arc? Surely she wouldn't get Keiko killed just to preserve the secrecy of Reikai, not after she was so careless giving Yusuke his instructions in front of Kuwabara, right? Or is she just so flaky that she forgot she could get away? Because otherwise, that's kind of a major plot hole.

I have a feeling that I'm going to get as irritated at plot holes and lack of consistent world-building in YuYu Hakusho as I've done for Trigun. There's the whole 'what can and can't Botan do' issue, the very bad explanation of exactly where the Four Beasts' city/castle is, the way Yusuke's power level and skills fluctuate astonishingly between volumes 3 and 7 of the manga, etc. I hate inconsistencies like that, and it's particularly frustrating when I really like the story and characters despite that, because it means I have to keep dealing with the problems and trying to systematize them in my head.
Argh.
